LONGTIME TEACHER PREDICTS
‘THE COMING COLLAPSE OF PUBLIC EDUCATION'
I'm nowhere near as pessimistic
about the future fortunes of public schools in this country, but here's a
thoughtful column by a longtime teacher that should be heeded:

Note her point about the demise
of small school districts and how mass school consolidation has destroyed local
community in public education. That has huge implications here in Nebraska,
where the battle continues over what's going to happen to our Class I country
schools.

NIGHTMARE IN A LINCOLN SCHOOL:
KINDERGARTNER SEXUALLY ASSAULTED
Just makes you want to cry:

No, our schools can't guarantee
perfect security. No, we don't want them run like lock-down jails. But gee
whiz, a little bit more emphasis on adult supervision is in order at all levels
of K-12 schooling. There should be adults standing outside a grade school
before and after classes, adults in the parking lots before and after school at
the high schools, adults in the halls during passing periods, and adults on the
playground during recess.
Common-sense management would have
in place a "buddy system" for restroom visits so that no child is ever in there
alone, too.
Our hearts go out to this little
boy and his family, and we know that educators are taking steps right now to
check their own security measures to do everything in their power to prevent a
recurrence.
