LINCOLN NORTH STAR
PRINCIPAL
TO FIX ROSH HASHANAH
SCHEDULING BLUNDER
Scheduling
parent-teacher conferences next Tuesday on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish High Holy
Day, was a mistake that Lincoln North Star High School principal Nancy Becker aims
to correct and never repeat.
"I
can't tell you how terrible I feel about this," she said. "Communication with
parents is very important to me."
Apparently,
the Lincoln Public Schools listed the wrong date for Rosh Hashanah in a
calendar sent to school officials for setting up their schools' individual
calendars. But Dr. Becker says she takes full responsibility for the error,
which violates district policy. LPS bans the setting of significant school
activities on religious holidays, which is true in most districts around the
country.
The
principal said she is going to make sure that an alternative conference time is
set up so that Jewish parents can meet with their children's teachers face to
face. She also vows to double-check with other school districts in the future
to guard against a recurrence.
