If you can't spell very well, you can't have very good
reading comprehension. And if you can't understand what you read very well, you
can't be very accurate or complex in your thinking. And if you can't THINK very
well . . . you can grow up to be an educrat!
Just
kidding. But take time to read the comments by business people at the bottom of
this story from the Brits. Yes, there are a few people among us who are
congenitally bad at spelling. But the vast majority of us - more than 95% --
should be able to spell the 5,000 or 10,000 words in everyday use to
perfection. The only reason so many of us can't is that we haven't been taught
to read with phonics, so we don't understand how letters come together into words
and so forth.
Many
business leaders, educrats and politicians spout off frequently about the need
to beef up our math and science education. No argument from here. But the
crucial need for good reading and writing instruction trumps 'em all:
